I thought I’d share some of the images I took while at my lighting workshop a few weeks ago. While I do love the hands on shooting experience at workshops, I find it difficult to really love, love any of the images I take. I think this is largely because they usually lack emotion since there are multiple people shooting them at any given time and they can’t really interact with the photographer. But seriousness aside, it is exciting to see how beautiful yet natural-looking artificial light can be. All of these images are lit with a flash in some way or another.

March Mentoring Madness

Mandi contacted us at the beginning of the year to see whether Liz would be doing any one-on-one workshops or mentoring sessions. This was something she’d considered, but hadn’t persued last year when she was attempting to “do less” while pregnant. Mandi was excited to be able to bounce all her questions off Liz in person and get instant feedback and instruction while being the guinea pig for our mentoring sessions. I’m pretty sure all parties involved had a great time, including our gracious model, Jamie.

So officially starting now, Liz does offer one-on-one mentoring sessions. Sessions last around 4 hours at our house in Salt Lake City. Before the session, you, the interested photographer, will send in a list of the top five questions/topics for us to cover so we’ll be prepared to cover these specifically. You’ll send in five images that you’ve taken, two versions of each (SOC + edited). This will allow Liz to critique/trouble shoot where you’re at with your images right now so she’ll know better which areas of shooting/editing she can help you with. On the day of the mentoring session, we’ll spend some time acutally shooting together on location with a model we have selected. It won’t be a formal shoot, but a chance for us to be side-by-side so Liz can explain her thought process when shooting, and also go over any manual settings, how she exposes and composes, how different situations and locations affect the shot, etc. with you. Then we’ll go inside and pull up the images and edit a few together so you can see our editing process. We’ll also do a little mini session where Liz shoots you (which is educational as well as you can learn a lot from being in front of the lens…). We will email you your best 5-10 shots that you can use as bio pictures when it’s all said and done.

Individual mentoring sessions are $500. However, to kick off our official mentoring start, March sessions will be half off, only $250. We are excited to offer these and have enjoyed answering questions via email and our Formspring account but the discussions which will take place during these mentoring sessions will be much more enlightening and personalized. Finally, the pictures in this post are of our model Jamie and the portraits/headshots of Mandi. Because of scheduling/distance traveled, Liz actually held this session at her mother-in-laws home. She and Mandi practiced making something from nothing when it comes to locations since it also happened to be raining that day. They found a variety of backgrounds and textures to demonstrate lighting, texture, and depth of field principles in response to Mandi’s questions (as well as take Mandi out of her comfort zone–she really didn’t like the snake…). The last, stunning image is straight out of camera from Mandi. That was Mandi’s goal for the workshop, to be able to get artistic, properly exposed pictures that won’t require a lot of back end processing. Props to her for being such an excellent student!

So I had a lovely “staycation” as my husband called it, but now I’m home and have mounds of work to get done! SO you’ll have to be patient with me this week. But I thought before I dig in I’d share a peak of what’s to come…

I’ve never seen Project Runway, not because I’m opposed to the show, simply because we don’t have a TV. I know. We’re weird. BUT if you’re a fan, you’re probably going to love this post. And even if you’re not, hopefully you’ll enjoy another taste of somthing new to me: Fashion Photography…

This past Saturday I attended Keith Bryce’s Big Bang Photoshoot. Keith won season 5 of Project Runway. He’s the creative mind behind all of these costumes and sets. And then there were various teams of makeup artists and hair stylists who pulled his vision together with the styling. It was a huge group effort, one I’m happy to have been a part of. I edited a whole bunch and instead of posting them all here, I put them up on facebook for a change. That way everyone could go to town tagging themselves and all their hard work. announcing MY winter workshops!

(UPDATE: So it turns out I was wrong when I said nothing good happens in January. My brother-in-law has decided to get married the weekend of my workshops. These will be rescheduled, but I won’t be figuring out those new details until after the holidays. Please email me if you’d like to be on list for the rescheduled workshops. I’m so excited to announce my first round of workshops! It’s true, I’ve never taught a workshop before, at least not offically, but I actually LOVE teaching and sharing my version of this world through photography with others. My grandma made a comment recently when discussing my photography with my aunts saying, “the first time I saw Liz outside standing on her head taking pictures I knew they were going to be different”. I love when my clients will tell of the times when they were “about to take a picture but stopped and thought, what would Liz do.” What would I do? Well, this is my chance to share that with you.

I’m offering two different workshops this January, because seriously, there’s nothing good that happens in January.

I’ll be teaching a course for beginners, particularly those who know their camera is capable of more, but they just can’t figure it out. This workshop is perfect for moms who’d like to take better snapshots of their kids, or someone who is intrigued by the art of photography, but doesn’t even know where to begin. For more information on the beginning workshop click HERE. The beginning workshop will be limited to 7 participants and will be geared to fit your individual needs. Upon registering, I will be getting in touch with each of you to find out exactly where we need to troubleshoot.

I’m also crazy excited to be offering an advanced course for professional photographers, or those who are headed in that direction. This workshop will be a hands-on all day experience wherein I’ll do my best to offer you a first hand example of “what Liz would do”. My goal in teaching you is not to enable you to shoot exactly like me, but rather, to help you find your own shooting style. I plan to not only answer your questions, but ask you many in return. I want you thinking all day long! This workshop will not only cover shooting, but will also feature an indepth Photoshop discussion/demonstration.
